In recent months it’s been common to see Manchester United named as one of the favourites to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica, so it’s strange to see how the Red Devils are now treated in the race for the centre-forward.

Since the French media claimed the player would not want to join clubs not playing in the Champions League next season, this is a version which was completely bought by the Portuguese press.

Paris Saint Germain star Kylian Mbappe announced at the weekend that he’s staying at the club, snubbing the chance of signing for Real Madrid. That basically ended Darwin’s chances of moving to France, and at the same time, made him a target for the La Liga giants.

So as the Portuguese media writes about this scenario, Manchester United are now forgotten as strong contenders for the signing.

Newspaper A Bola writes about Real Madrid’s potential interest, and at the end of the story, they claim the striker has been ‘resisting’ clubs such as the Old Trafford side, just because he wants a Champions League side.

Meanwhile, newspaper Record has a very similar story and doesn’t even mention Manchester United this time. That’s the same outlet who frequently named the Premier League side as one of the favourites.

It’s been a long time since we all knew that the Red Devils would not qualify for the Champions League this season. But in the past few days, that seems to have become a major problem in their hunt for Darwin.
